Residential trash collection is provided twice a week for each residence in University Park. All trash should be placed out by 7 a.m. on collection days. The City charges the following amounts per month for collection of garbage and trash from residences. (Rates effective October 1, 2020)

Trash cans (maximum 32-gallon capacity) must be located on private property adjacent to the alley right-of-way. Each trash can must have a lid, which must be secured by wire or chain to a fence, building, or other structure. Residents must have an adequate number of trash cans to contain a normal amount of refuse. If there is additional volume that cannot fit into the trash cans, plastic bags may be set out on the day of collection ONLY.

Recycling
Residents can fill their recycling containers with the same items that have been placed in the blue bags and bins:
- Newspapers, newspaper inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, paperboard, cardboard, office paper and phones books;
- All food and beverage glass bottles and jars;
- Plastic bottles and jugs – (no polystyrene or styrofoam);
- Empty aerosol containers;
- Aluminum, tin and steel cans;
- Waxpaper cartons – (milk cartons, juice boxes, etc.).
Other Tips and Procedures:
- Before placing bottles, cans and jars inside the containers, bins or the blue recycling bags, residents should rinse the materials.
- All paper materials should be placed directly into the bins. Cardboard boxes can be flattened and placed in containers or under bins to maximize space.
- To assure pick-up, place all recyclables next to your trash cans by 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection day.
Recycle Using City-Marked Bins and Blue Bags Only:
City sanitation personnel have confidence that the material in the blue recycling bags is intended for recycling. The City-marked containers and bins provide crews with that same level of confidence. Residents are urged not to place recycling material in any thing other than the City-marked containers, bins or blue recycling bags. Blue recycling bags can be purchased at any local grocery or drugstore.
Note: Each resident receiving an individual City sanitation bill will be charged a recycling fee. (Rates effective October 1, 2020)

RECYCLING (BLUE CONTAINERS AND BLUE BAGS)
32-Gallon Recycling Containers:
For $10 residents can now exchange their existing 18-gallon recycling bin for a 32-gallon recycling containerwith a tight-fitting lid. The lid keeps contents dry and prevents materials like newspapers from blowing away. Those who don't want to exchange their 18-gallon recycling bin can purchase a 32-gallon bin for $20. Residents should note that the new containers must comply with the same City Code provisions that apply to trash containers. Specifically, the 32-gallon containers cannot be placed in the alley right-of-way and their lids must be attached to a fence or other permanent object.
Requesting a 32-Gallon Recycling Container:
Residents can request one of the new recycling containers by calling 311 or by submitting an online request, click here.
Once a request has been made, the new container will be delivered to the alley or regular trash collection location for that particular address. The trade-in bin should be left for a sanitation crew member to collect at that same location. The $10 charge for the new container will be added to the resident's next utility bill. While residents are still allowed to deposit recycling material in the more familiar blue bags and bins, residents should fill their containers or bins first and then use the blue bags.
Additional Containers:
Additional containers can be purchased for $20 or $10 with the trade-in of a recycling bin. This includes residents who:
- Want to use more than one container
- Want to replace a container that has been lost or damaged
- Have just moved to University Park

YARD WASTE COLLECTION
The Sanitation Division picks up brush, grass, leaves and other yard waste separately from household garbage. Collected brush and yard waste is taken to a composting facility for processing. To be collected, all grass clippings and other yard waste must be placed inside a biodegradable paper yard waste bag.
BRUSH AND LIMBS COLLECTION
Tree limbs and branches should be placed on the parkway for pickup. The cost for brush collection depends upon the volume of material. Any brush charges are then added to the resident's next utility bill. (Rates effective October 1, 2020)

APPLIANCE, FURNITURE, AND LARGE ITEM COLLECTION
The Sanitation Division provides collection and disposal of large and bulky items, such as appliances or large furniture. Residents should place these items on the parkway for pick up on a "call-in" basis. The City charges the following amounts for the removal of appliances, furniture and other large items. (Rates effective October 1, 2020)
- Washer, dryer, water heater, sofa, bed, etc. $26.81
- Refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioning unit $87.41

TRANSFER STATION
University Park residents may use the City's solid waster transfer station, located at 2525 University Blvd, once a month without charge. The Transfer Station is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Transfer Station is closed on observed Holidays. Use of the transfer station is restricted to residents, who must be present when off-loading. For more than one load per month, the following fees apply:

E-Waste Disposal
University Park residents can now dispose of unwanted electronics free of charge at the City's waste transfer station. The City is partnering with Global Asset to dispose of the items listed below in a safe and environmentally sustainable fashion. The process also ensures that all personal data contained on the disposed of materials is destroyed.
Disposal is easy and free. Residents can visit the City's waste transfer station at2525 University Blvd.(just east of North Central Expressway) from7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday . All items must be placed inside a large marked container that is located inside the gated facility. Before placing the items in the container, residents will be asked to verify their University Park address by showing a valid driver license, other government ID or current utility bill.

Household Hazardous Waste
The City, through an Interlocal Agreement with Dallas County, participates in a program to provide safe and legal disposal of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) for University Park residents.
Residents have two options under this program:
- Drop off items at the Household Chemical Collection Center (HC3)
- Attend any HHW Collection event conducted by the Dallas Area Household Hazardous Waste Network.
Both services are free to University Park residents. Please bring a driver's license and a recent utility bill stub to prove residency. The Household Chemical Collection Center is located at:
The HC3 is located one mile north of IH-635 (LBJ Freeway). The facility is the first building past the railroad tracks (heading north on Plano Road) on the east side of Plano Road. The building is easily identifiable by its white color and bright turquoise trim.

Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Monthly - 2nd and 4th Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PARK CITIES RECYCLING EVENTS - SPRING/FALL
The City of University Park and the Town of Highland Park host two community recycling events a year. The spring event is held in April, the fall event is held in late September or early October. Paper products, e-waste and clothing/household items are accepted.
Paper products and documents that can be disposed of include: Tax records, medical records, legal files, financial records, invoices, canceled checks, blueprints, contracts, payroll records, company letterhead, junk mail containing personal information, and any information that contains credit card, social security, driver license and account numbers.
Accepted E-waste items include: computers, computer monitors, computer accessories, TV's, printers, DVD/CD players, copiers, fax machines, scanners, cell phones and chargers, external hard drives, video and camera equipment, video game systems, microwaves, cables, power cords, powers strips and more.
Participating Firms/Organizations:
- Shred-it collects and shreds all documents on-site.
- Global Asset collects and disposes all e-waste items. In addition to working with the City and other municipalities, the company currently supports over 150 clients in the public sector. Global Asset removes data on all collected storage devices using Department of Defense security standards.
- The Salvation Army or Goodwill also participates in these events.
Specific dates are advertised on the City website, in the local media and on social media.
DISPOSAL OF SHARPS
"Sharps" is a medical term for items with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut skin. Examples include needles, syringes, and lancets. Every year University Park sanitation workers are injured by sharps that are improperly discarded. Approximately 9 million Americans use sharps to manage medical conditions. This results in the disposal of more than 3 billion used needles and other sharp items annually.
How to Dispose of Sharps Safely
- Use a red Sharps container, securing lid with heavy-duty tape
- Place the secured bottle in the trash for collection
If You Do Not Use a Red Sharps Container
- Place needles, syringes and lancets in a hard plastic or metal container with a screw-on cap or tightly secured lid - Bleach bottle or liquid detergent bottle
- Reinforce the lid of the container with heavy-duty tape
- Label the container "Not for Recycling"
- Place the secured bottle in the trash for collection
- Do not put loose needles, syringes and lancets in trash cans
- Do not put needles, syringes or lancets in glass jars, coffee cans, aluminum cans or clear or thin plastic containers
The disposal method above is only for sharps used in the household. Clinics, hospitals and other commercial users must follow Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations.
