Players Treat Love as a High-Stakes Game

Some guys search for love and a lasting commitment, while others approach romance as a high-stakes game. Players initially love bomb their targets using compliments, gifts, and attention that is too good to be true.

Before the unsuspecting gal knows it, she's crying, wondering what went wrong, and eating an entire quart of triple chocolate Häagen-Dazs as he leaves for more challenging conquests. Players demonstrate the finesse to manipulate others and the skill to make their targets believe it wasn't really just about sex all along. (In the end, however, players end up lonely if they don't change their ways.)

Perhaps you're a player. Or maybe you've been the target of one. Whatever the case, make a playlist of pop, rock, country, and R&B songs about womanizing guys.

1. "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega

The guy in this hot 1999 mambo and jazz song calls flirting a sport, and then he proceeds to name names. (Yes, those dirty dogs not only break hearts but also kiss and tell!) The sexy tune is chock full of energy, and this make out artist uses it to name check his best girls: Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary, and Jessica.

Lou Bega added lyrics to a mambo melody written by Cuban musician Dámaso Pérez Prado and included the names of his own former girlfriends. "Mambo No. 5" was a global number one hit except for the United States, where it peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the mainstream pop chart. Because it was Bega's only hit to reach the Top 40, he became a one-hit wonder.

2. "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

The señorita in this seductive Latin pop tune from 2019 is getting played by an untrustworthy lover who works quickly. One moment she's dancing with him on a beach, and the next thing you know, this silver-tongued devil is moving their budding romance to the local Holiday Inn for a few days.

Although she feels magnetically drawn to him, the smitten gal knows she shouldn't be there with him. She wishes she didn't need him and acknowledges that she should be running from him. But the poor girl can't help herself:

Locked in the hotel
There's just some things that never change
You say, "We're just friends."
But friends don't know the way you taste-la-la-la
'Cause you know it's been a long time comin'
Don't you let me fall, oh
Oh, when your lips undress me
Hooked on your tongue
Ooh, love, your kiss is deadly

This sultry song burned up the charts around the world and topped the charts in more than 40 countries, including the United States. Mendes and Cabello became an item in 2019.

3. "Cowboy Cassanova" by Carrie Underwood

Look out for this cowboy because his love is like a disease, a drug, or a curse. Carrie Underwood compares him to the famous 18th-century Italian playboy Giacomo Cassanova—and not in a flattering way.

In this peppy 2009 country song, the narrator is a betrayed woman who warns other women about the player she fell for. She cautions others who might fall for his good looks to run for their lives. This playboy will only bring heartbreak and empty promises. She thus calls him:

4. "I Hope" by Gabby Barrett

This double-crossed lady has a dark, vengeful heart, and she's getting the last word. The country hit from 2019 features a female narrator who comments on her ex's new love relationship and wishes him the same misery she experienced. She's clever about it, however, and wraps it up in candy-coated well-wishes.

Even though he broke her heart by cheating, the jilted narrator initially says she hopes that his new lady friend makes all his dreams come true. She hopes that his new love interest makes him deliriously happy, is everything he needs, and he spends his last dime just to put an engagement ring on her hand.

And then—wait for it—this hard-hearted woman brings the hammer down, expressing that she hopes her replacement cheats on him and makes him feel as crestfallen as she did. Ah, karma! It's refreshing to hear Gabby Barrett take the low road. Barrett appeared on Season 16 of American Idol and finished in third place.

5. "Boys Like You" by Anna Clendening

The narrator in this 2017 pop song refused to listen to her mother's sage advice. Between his lies and her own problems with low self-esteem, the young woman couldn't steer clear of this ladies' man. The poor gal found him irresistible, so now she doubts the authenticity of his motives and the existence of love itself. She also wonders if she's getting played:

So when you hold me, am I the only one?
Do you wanna know me, or is this all just for fun?

If you have to ask, then you probably are getting played.

6. "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

It sounds like someone needs to kick this loser to the curb. In this classic 1988 rock song by the badass Queen of Rock, it's 2 a.m. and the narrator's all-too-popular boyfriend is again a no-show. The disappointed woman knows that her two-timing boyfriend is screwing around again. Some dudes don't try very hard to hide their duplicity.

No matter how badly the guy treats her, she keeps coming back for seconds. (Sister, this one's on you.) Rather than berating him for his inability to keep his zipper up, the confused gal hates herself for loving him.

7. "We Know" by Fifth Harmony

Although he sure is a tall glass of water, these gals are onto him. He has a tried and true game that has worked with a lot of girls. The player in this R&B song uses the same words, same jokes, and the same laugh. Although it's worked before, one of these smart gals steps up to volunteer that she won't be fooled again. She tells him to stay in his lane.

8. "I Knew You Were Trouble" by Taylor Swift

Trust your instincts, girls! This guy in this 2012 pop song was wrapped up in a big red flag, but Taylor Swift couldn't help falling for him anyway. Her hit was inspired by former One Directioner Harry Styles.

The tune describes the romance as a mistake she knew she was making from the very start, but she fell hard, "lost her balance" for a guy who didn't care. The short-lived relationship left her on the cold, hard ground. Now just a notch in his belt, she accepts the responsibility because she knew he was trouble from the get-go.

9. "Familiar" by Liam Payne and J Balvin

Okay, like absolutely not. The player in this 2018 Latin and R&B song is feeling overly self-confident when he approaches a girl he doesn't know and sexually propositions her. He suggests repeatly that they get familiar then expresses a desire to get inside her brain. Subsequently, in Spanish, the man gives her a bewildering back-handed compliment, "And I like you a lot better than a hundred-dollar bill." Did Romeo just offer to pay her? This desperate player obviously needs work on his technique.

10. "Lips Are Movin'" by Meghan Trainor

When she smells another girl's perfume on her man's shirt collar, this saucy gal lets loose on him. Despite her boyfriend's protests, she knows he's been at it again. Point blank, she accuses him:

But I know you lie
'Cause your lips are moving
Baby, don't you know I'm done.

The 2014 pop song has a bubblegum pop and doo-wop vibe and took only eight minutes to write.

11. "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child

This boy is running game, acting shady, and offering up short statements like "uh-huh" and "Yeah, okay" in lieu of his usual string of sweet nothings. His beloved is rightfully suspicious. In this Grammy Award-winning R&B song from 1999, the savvy woman calls out her lover for his strange behavior. Although he assures her that he's alone, she has already heard another voice in the background. To prove he's not up to sexy mischief, she makes a simple request. All he needs to do is say her name. Dude's been caught.

12. "Ramblin' Man" by The Allman Brothers

The guy in this 1973 country-tinged pop song must not have heard the old expression, "Bloom where you are planted." Born the son of an ill-fated gambler, he now makes his living traveling the country and doesn't stay too long in one location. As a result, the ladies must simply accept that he's not the kind to be tied down:

And when it's time for leavin'
I hope you'll understand
That I was born a ramblin' man.

"Ramblin' Man" was The Allman Brothers' highest-charting single on the mainstream pop charts, the US Hot 100, and it was their only Top 10 hit on the chart. Rolling Stone named the group one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

13. "Womanizer" by Britney Spears

In this globally successful electropop hit from 2008, Britney does a lot of name-calling and wants the skirt chaser to know she sees him for exactly what he is. Fake, dangerously charming, and with the swagger of a champion, this guy isn't looking for love. He's a predator, and she's having none of it.

14. "Rumour Has It" by Adele

Adele laments the rumors that are flying around about her love life in this bluesy 2011 song. Word about town is that her man is a player burning both ends of the candle. He's been creeping with a woman half his age and made a fool out of the narrator but then went back to his longtime lover. Don't believe everything you hear, however.

15. "Put You Up on Game" by Aretha Franklin and Fantasia

To "put you up on game" means to school someone on how it is. That's exactly what Aretha Franklin does in this hit 2007 R&B duet with Fantasia. The older narrator confides that she has been through stuff with men and speaks from the voice of experience. She attempts to caution the younger woman that although every man is different, players do not change their game. The older lady seems to want to unload some additional information about her friend's man, but the younger woman isn't ready to hear it, so she doesn't go there. The warning has been given.

16. "Nice to Meet Ya" by Niall Horan

Talk about going from zero to 100 fast. The speedy dater in this 2019 pop rock doesn't even know the name of the girl he's trying to get to know, but already he is

• expressing love for her
• talking about spending the night together and
• telling her he wants her name tattooed on his arm.

This player offers to buy her a drink, but she should be very careful that there's nothing extra in it, if you know what I mean.

17. "The Fireman" by George Strait

Thank goodness for the player in this 1984 country song who stays busy helping his community by fighting fires. When the ladies get smoldering hot or need to put out an old flame, this sexy man is who they call for some mouth-to-mouth. Public servant, he is.

18. "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" by Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson

Who knows how many women these two Lotharios have bedded down between the two of them. In this internationally popular 1984 country duet, two narrators give a shout-out to the revolving door of ladies they have romanced. The middle-aged playboys reminisce about caressing them, receiving their love, and sharing steamy nights of ecstasy. Apparently, however, the men grew bored and couldn't maintain a relationship too long. As a result, the women are now someone else's wives, and these two fellas are just living in the past.

19. "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift

"Love's a game, want to play?"

In this 2014 electropop hit, an international playboy has met his match when he meets a manipulative, crazy diva with a long list of ex-lovers. She recognizes his vulnerability (he's "new money"), and she brags, "I can make the bad guys good for a weekend." Will he be up for the challenge?

Tay-Tay warns him to hang on tight because this affair is going to be fun, reckless, and an emotional rollercoaster. She hints that they're either going to make history together or else things will get very nasty in the end. Either way, it'll be un-freaking-forgettable. Although they dated for only a few months, from September 2012 to January 2013, Taylor Swift reportedly wrote "Blank Space" about Harry Styles.

20. "How You Did It" by JoJo

The girl in this pop tune from 2009 got played because she failed to follow her initial instincts about this guy. Now she's getting her revenge by his two-timing ways:
